Topsy Turvy Tomato update...

My Topsy Turvy planter is still hanging in there.
I have several small bunches of tomatoes growing and lots more flowering and developing.
~
I planted it out on December 31 so how much longer before they start to ripen and turn red? They are in full sun most of the day. The varieties are grosse lisse, apollo and roma but they all look the same so far. This thing loves water so I give it a good soak every day otherwise it wilts.
~
Around the other side there is parsley and continental parsley, oregano, chives and thyme plus basil, which is hidden under all those tomato plants. They all look healthy and I have snipped off bits for different dishes and they taste amazing.
~
In another tub planter, I have some salad lettuces growing. These are about 3 weeks old now and have boomed along and are ready for picking. For about $6 I have enough lettuce to last us through until the end of summer. I water them with rain water and they are chemical free.
~
On the food front, dinner tonight is lamb loin chops marinated with garlic, plum and soy sauce (a la Angus - bless him!) with mash and carrots & beans with bacon plus gravy. For dessert it's called... get an icecream (Cornett0) from the freezer or have a mini trifle that I made. No-one else really likes trifle, so I guess they are mine!
~
Normally I would set a jelly in a glass bowl with jam rollette sponge rolls doused in sherry, top with fruit then custard, more fruit then custard and cream on top. These are sort of a low fat, single serve version...just for me! Jelly, Yo-yo biscuits (I didn't have any sponge rolls) drizzled with Marsala (no sherry either!), topped with custard and a cherry.

  2. Joolz your tomatoes will be a few more weeks and all your plants look sp healthy. Trifle....mmmmm.
I have started using sponge biscuits for my trifles as you can keep them in the pantry and they are there when you need them.

  3. Your Topsy Turvy looks amazing! Mine didn't do too well this year, but I think I may have damaged the roots when I put it in. (the plant was a bit too big, I think) It's growing... but it's rather weedy looking, but I do have a couple of tomatoes on it, so it's not a total loss anyway. The plants that I put in big pots have done far better, and we can hardly eat the 'maters fast enough!

  4. I think your tomatoes will probably start colouring up fairly soon now. The Roma will be the egg shaped ones, the others I have no idea :)

Yes, I can't wait to pick a ripe tomato and taste it.

  6. Oh, YUM! I love home grown tomatoes. My husband refuses to garden, because he knows I'll say I'll help, but I never do. He's right. But I could put some planters out just for tomatoes. We'll see.

  7. Hello Joolz, Your topsy turvy tomatoes seem to be coming along alright especially if they have tomatoes on them.

I have just caught up with your past posts as I haven't been on here much lately (I find myself on here too much), you have been very busy lately.

I am borrowing your mars bar chocolate crackle recipe. I will give this a try for Easter this year.

    Enjoy your week,

    Tania
