That call in the night...

We had a very nice Sunday at home, this weekend past.  Gus mowed the lawns in between watching the motor racing and the cricket.
~
I did more gardening, tidying the rose bushes, cutting back cat mint that was overgrown.  I planted out some petunias so they should be in bloom by Christmas.
~
By dinner time, the sunset was so pretty, casting an eery glow on everything...
~
With not much on tv, we had lights out at about 10pm...
~
Then just after 11pm, a phone call woke us to tell us that 3 cars were on fire at our car dealership!  It was our service manager who called.  He was just coming back into town from a weekend away with his family when they saw the flashing lights of the police and fire trucks.
~
We raced to get dressed, still half asleep then took off into town, not knowing what we would find.  When we arrived, we saw 3 cars well alight, still being doused by our Country Fire Service men.
All I can say, is that I was thankful that the buildings were not alight.
~
Vehicles can be replaced and we are covered by insurance but if it had spread to our showroom, offices or workshop, our business would be crippled for a long time.  We are lucky that it happened at a time when there were still people driving by - if it happened at 2-3am, no one may have noticed the fire until later when more damage could have occurred.  Also, it was a very still night so the flames were not fanned much.
~
This is a brand new Ford Territory, completely gutted on the inside...
~
This is a second hand Land Rover Discovery, recently traded, now ready for the junk yard...
~
You can see how the fire melted the Ford oval sign - behind that wall is our service workshop and directly up against that wall are plastic bottles of oil and coolant, a kerosene tool washer and many aerosol cans - how lucky that a spark didn't get in?  The plastic bottles had started to melt just from the radiant heat - so lucky!
~
Now, would you like to know how this all happened?  To start with, we weren't sure if it hadn't been deliberately lit or whether a vehicle just ignited or what...
Eventually, Police obtained a statement from a witness that said a man was seen fleeing the scene, not wearing any trousers!  Hmmm, obviously deliberately lit!
~
Then police asked to see our Closed Circuit Television footage - we had this surveillance system installed when we completed our new showroom in May this year.  Every so often we get vandalised so we thought it may be a good deterrent to such crimes.
~
(Idiots get joy out of stomping on car bonnets (hoods) or rubbing gravel into bonnets or running a coin down the side of vehicles or stealing a tail light or two or snapping off a side view mirror.   All these are small incidences that are not worth claiming insurance on (because of our excess), just a cost to us, the business owner.)
On viewing the recording, we found that a man had entered the car yard a good 1.5 hours before the blaze started.  He looked at many vehicles before leaving the yard, returning with a 5 litre can then proceeded to punch a hole in a fuel tank of a diesel Ford Focus.  We later discovered he let this fuel just go out onto the ashphalt.  He was after unleaded fuel.  This ashphalt will now need to be replaced as it is a fire hazard.
~
He then made several more trips on and off the yard before finally going directly behind the grey Holden Barina.  Seconds later, KABOOM! an explosion occurs and he is seen running then falling to the ground with his trousers on fire.  He finally gets them off but picks them up and carries the flaming ball to the front of the yard then drops it.
Police had a pretty good idea of who the culprit was and on viewing the tape (known offender), were even more sure.  Now they just had to find him.  After a short search in the early hours of the morning, he was located with burns to his legs.  He is now is custody and has been charged with arson and illegal interference with a vehicle.
~
This guy is a criminal, fresh out of jail recently and just can't help himself.  He is a serial shop lifter in our small town, has been banned from entering 5 different retail stores because he steals something every time he enters, yet he is out of jail again and offends less than a week later!  He also was picked up last Friday for another misdemeanor but let go...
~
We are so thankful to our wonderful staff, who came to our aid Sunday night, shifting vehicles out of the workshop to safety in case it went up and helping to secure the premises afterwards.  We were still there at 3am.  On Monday morning, further mopping up was needed as a lot of water and foam was sprayed into the workshop just as a precaution and to cool the wall down.  By 8.30am, all staff were back on deck and working normally.
~
Of course, mention must also be made about out local CFS brigade who had the fires under control within about 10 minutes then continued to make sure every spark and ember were extinguished in each vehicle, dousing them with retardant foam, which took a while.  The police were wonderful and acted quickly and we are so pleased we got this imbecile and that he is now in custody until he appears before a magistrate in the new year.

Here is a link to the news story (my hubby is in it) and footage of the blast and the idiot trying to get his pants off - its quite funny!

Garden tidied...

I filled a wheelie bin with weeds and cuttings from the roses ...
~
There is still a bit to do and I'd like to get a few more petunias in but now that the weeding is done, that can be done later this week...

This end is largly overgrown with rosemary and morning glory vine but it does keep the weeds down...
Now, I am just going to pile on the water...
My tomatoes are growing taller daily...

~
The cherry tomato plants are slow to grow but have fruit and flowers on them...
These are the Romas...

Gluten Free Christmas Cake

I googled for a recipe, not having made a gluten free anything much before. The recipe sounded good and straight-forward and it all came together nicely. Tip #1 - with recipes with lots of ingredients, always read through the recipe so you know where each ingredient needs to go. You don't want to go melting butter, if its meant to be creamed...

Here's the link - http://www.foodcrush.com.au/2012/11/29/return-of-the-gluten-free-christmas-cake/

~

These are all the dry ingredients, lots of spices ...

So much fruit - 1 kilogram to be exact! The sultanas, raisins, cherries (and I added currants to make up the weight) had to be soaked in 2/3 cup of brandy for 3-4 days so it was nice and plump.

Grated zest of 1 lemon and orange...
Mixing the fruit with the flour and spices. I forgot to take pics of the eggs and creamed butter, sugar and treacle. I had bowls of stuff everywhere.
Hint #2 - set out your bowls ready to mix each step!

Here is the cake in it's spring-form tin. The base has 2 layers of newspaper plus 2 layers of baking paper to protect from over browning and the inside of the tin is lined with baking paper and has 2 layers of newspaper tied around the outside of the tin. There is no way this puppy is going to burn or stick!

Ready for the oven...

Three hours later, the house smalled delicious and I was well pleased with myself!

I think its perfect. Of course, until its cut, I'll never know! Once it cooled, I brushed its bottom and top with more brandy (hic!) and have tucked it away in a container. Just before I give it, I will top it with brazil nuts, cherries and dried apricots, glazed with apricot jam... (pic to come).
~
I might have a day off from baking today. I got some gardening done yesterday so a bit more weeding needs to be done and I have some petunias to plant out to add a bit more colour.
~
And the tree! I really need to get that up too!
What are you up to today? Running around like a headless chook?

Christmas Gingerbread ...

After making the Candy Cane cookies and Cherry Shortbreads earlier in the week, I also made a big batch of what we call Sookie St James chocolate chip cookies (remember Sookie from Gilmore girls?). They have milk, dark and white choc in them plus a hit of coffee! Brianna took them to work at the hospital to share with everyone on her shift.
I made the gingerbread dough on Thursday but let it rest in the fridge until Friday when I started rolling it out. It doesn't take long to cook so I soon had lots of stars and trees to decorate.

I used a recipe for Royal Icing which is 1 cup of icing sugar, 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice and 1 egg white. Whip the egg white until frothy but firm then add in the juice and icing sugar and beat until smooth. I did add a little more icing sugar so it was a bit stiffer.

What do you think of my Aussie biscuits? I was really pleased with these. After about an hour, I had red and green icing dripping off me and most surfaces in my kitchen, oh my!
~
Most of the cookies were given away on Friday to the girls at the bank where I go each day, a bag to the girls at the post office and some are winging their way to a far off destination! Joolz's December of Cookies! I have more batches to make this coming week.
-
Next up, a gluten free Christmas Fruit cake which I am giving as a present.

PW Chocolate Candy Cane Cookies ...

Pioneer Woman sure knows how to please people in the holiday season...  I have been making these cookies for a few years now and they never fail to please!
~
 ~
 ~
This is the cookie cutter than I use to flatten the cookies and indent them with a pattern.  You could just use a fork or the bottom of a glass.
~
 ~
(Blogger is not playing the game and is turning some of my pics sideways!)
~
 Crushed cany canes...
~
The production line - melt the chocolate in a mug, make deep dipping easier.
~
Ta dah!  The recipe is here (I use candy canes because I couldn't find peppermint boiled lollies like PeeDub and also just white choc melts instead of the almond bark)

That Best Ever Chocolate Sheet Cake ...

This Pioneer Woman cake was a real winner when I made it for Kirby's birthday last weekend...
~
It fits in a large sponge roll/slice tin.  I found it needed a little extra cooking time so that the middle was done (can you see the knife marks?)...
Note:  a stick of butter is 125 gms so 2 sticks, 250 gms.
~
Oh, the frosting is just to die for!  There was a bit too much of this too so it started to ooze over the sides of the tin!  I didn't put nuts in the icing as we are not big on them.  Its a good cake for a small crowd as its very rich so one small square is probably enough (for most).  I sent some off to Brianna's boyfriend and Kirby also took some to work on Monday.  The never-ending cake!
~
Lovely and moist but light too!
~
The recipe link is here - I found that the printable version has a bit of a mistake in the 'method'.  It doesn't mention adding in the dry ingredients when mixing the cake so it is best to follow along with the the pictorial version on Ree's blog, here.

Hello December ...

Well, December has arrived and I now need to start feeling Christmassy - I am hosting Christmas lunch at our house this year.
~

I spent the weekend in Adelaide, catching up with Kirby for her birthday (Bri came too) so that was lovely.  We just hung out and had some nice meals out too. I made Pioneer Woman's Best Ever Chocolate Sheet Cake - Lordy, it was good!  More on that later...
~
Local Bird in the Hand Pinot Rose...
~
Lunch at Rain (on The Parade) - dumplings in curry sauce...
~
Pork sweet & sour ...(I wanted to steal this plate!)
~
Thai green chicken curry - nearly my favourite - so many places in Adelaide do it, can't find a bad one!
~
I got all my decorations that we need to transform our pergola area outside into a red, green and gold wonderland (Kirby is in charge of that!).  Its usually windy so we will probably have paper cups and plates flying all over the lawn!  A warm, calm day would be lovely, Santa - fingers crossed!
~
Boxes for my 'sister' presents to go in...
~
 Bon-bons - lots of bon-bons!
~
More baubles to hang under the pergola - those packs were only $3 and the big balls $5 each...
~
Paper plates, serviettes, tablecloths and candy canes...
I think we are expecting about 22 (+/-) adults and 13 children (+/-) so we use paper plates which makes clean up much easier.  Everyone brings meat and salads so the pressure is not all on me to provide for all.
~
I started a bit of baking last night but these are going to my brother-in-law who had a hip replacement op yesterday.  He loves chocolate and mint so the Choc Candy Cane cookies will hit the spot.  Also, some of my Cherry Shortbreads.
~
I have made the Christmas pudding, for Christmas day I will make stuffing muffins, a watermelon, mint & fetta salad, we'll do a glazed ham and I also, for the first time, have a frozen turkey to cook but this might be cooked in the BBQ on Boxing Day (26th) to serve hot - we'll see.  I got it because is was out for $25 instead of $40.  At this stage, I think Gus' side of the family are coming on Boxing day rather than us catching up Christmas Day.  It's just too hard to head off somewhere else when you've hosted that big lunch.
~
How are you preparations going or haven't you started.  I need to get our tree up in the next few days (or on the weekend)!
~
