Hottest day on record!

Our capital city, Adelaide is bracing for 46C (114.8F) today, making the hottest capital city in the world today! Conditions are perfect for bushfires with gusty northerly winds. There are already fires blazing because of dry lightening strikes.
Outback Tania, in Port Augusta, has already experienced 49.1C (120.3F) this week! Crazy! We got to about 43C yesterday and that was bad enough. I don't think you could breathe the air, it would be that hot!
My garden is holding up okay. We have a sprinkler system which waters early in the morning and I have been moving a manual sprinkler along the back garden so the ground stays moist. Of course, the roses are burning off but that is to be expected.

I feel sorry for our mechanics who work in a big tin shed - we have industrial fans and provide ice water and icy pole icecreams for them and dont begrudge them having cool down breaks when they need. I would say they will knock off early today, its not worth risking heat stroke.

Perth in Western Australia has had devastating bushfires and property losses. This morning on the news, it was reported that 4 teenagers had been caught deliberately lighting a fire in grass. Oh, my God! These mongrels need to be locked up for a very long time! My solution would be to take all their worldly possessions, everything they hold dear and put it on a bonfire and light it up in front of them! Next, make them do volunteer duty in a burns unit at a hospital just to see what its like to be burned badly. Then, maybe a stint as a volunteer firefighter, putting their lives on the line in extreme temperatures! If it was my child, I would kick their ass into the middle of next week and make sure all of the above punishments were carried out! It makes my blood boil!!

Now I've had my rant, its time to get to work. Our air conditioning in our office went on the fritz yesterday so it ain't gonna be pretty, but I will be cooler than our poor mechanics!
Stay tuned for a top temperature report! My Weatherzone app on my phone tells me that Mount Gambier reached 44.1C so we would be much the same.
Cheers - Joolz xx

  2. It is lovely and cool here in SE Qld and I actually have a cardigan on at present. I really feel for you down there in the southern states as our one 40 degree day nearly did me in! It is hard to believe that teenagers are lighting fires but unfortunately there isn't much between the eardrums at that age with some kids. Hopefully they will become more responsible as they mature. Stay cool and I hope the weather changes for you very soon.

  5. That temperature is just crazy! But you guys in SA have a few hot days in the 40's, not good. Hope it cools down soon for you. We had 38 yesterday in NSW and are expecting 40 on Saturday. I feel sorry for all the animals outside especially the wild life. Stay cool!!

  6. I am so over the heat Joolz, still 45C here today. We have been over forty for nearly two weeks. This week the temperature has been above 46 everyday, with no relief at night time...I cant recall ever feeling the heat like I have this week! We get a slight relief this weekend (34F) and then hot again next week, but thankfully not into the 40's at this stage. Yesterday while we weren't home it reached 50C. I can tell it was hot, because a lot of my plants are burned or karked it!

  7. I forgot to mention that my first year apprentice electrician son has been working everyday in these temperatures, he is absolutely knackered...he is not eating or sleeping much either. Most of the time he has worked on new building estates with no air conditioning and very hot roofs. He has to wear the full safety gear, long sleeve shirts and long trousers...

  8. Adelaide even made the newspapers over here as the hottest place on earth on Thursday. I can remember those awful hot spells - and how often the power cut out at critical times so we couldn't even run the aircon! We had a lovely high ceilinged bluestone villa, so it took a while to heat up, but when it did, it retained the heat for ages after the weather cooled down, even with one of those fans in the roof to draw out the heat. I don't think I could cope with that heat anymore.

And so awful to hear about the fires :( My sister-in-law is at Mt Compass and they're on red alert there as well. It's so sad that people go around and deliberately light fires in weather like that.

Here we have minus degrees and lots of fluffy white snow. It's hard to comprehend isn't it?
