First day of the season...?

Why do the European and US summer seasons start on June 21st (mid month) when all our seasons start on the 1st of the month?
~
In Australia our seasons run like this...
.
Winter - June 1 to August 31
Spring - September 1 to November 30
Summer - December 1 to February 28
Autumn - March 1 to May 31
~
Just curious...

  1. In the US it goes by the solstices. June 21 is the summer solstice...longest day of our year...the most minutes from sunup to sunset. The winter solstice (Dec 21) is the shortest day of our year...fewest minutes from sunup to sunset.

  3. No clue why. Maybe our seasons are different. It's always really hot well before December 21. Imagine how silly it would be to call a string of 37 degree days spring. As for winter, it has already been cold here, well before June 21.
