Chicken fried steak (schnitzel) and creamy gravy...

I made a delicious drink on the weekend, more a slushie than a smoothie.
Just whizzed up watermelon, coconut water and fresh mint in my bullet. Lovely and refreshing!

Our new lounge suite finally arrived! We've gone from a rusty brown to dark chocolate so its taking some getting used to.  Our old leather suite was 25 years old (we got it the week before Kirby was born) and we really had worn it out.  Still, I got $50 for it and someone carted it away to use in their 'man cave'! It was going to the dump on Friday if no one claimed it. I'm happy!
~
Now I need to recover our dining room chairs with a coffee/latte colour and we need to get rid of the chocolate chilli feature wall and paint it a coffee colour.
~
Our lounge room is a weird shape and its so hard to fit furniture in there properly!
~
It has been a while since I have taken pics of our sunsets and I just happened to come out the door to see this one.

Next morning we woke to a thick fog blanketing the town...a real pea souper!
~
Fogs usually begin a beautiful, clear sunny day and thats what we got yesterday.

(My schnitter, not expertly plated as it was late and I was starving!)
Last night we had chicken schnitzels which I baked in the oven, instead of deep frying them (I encased then in foil until they were nearly cooked through then let them brown up until done).            I made a gravy that is very common in the US. Our Aussie gravies are dark whereas this is really more like a white sauce. It was delicious and I know one daughter, Brianna, will love it!

Exhibit A of a chicken fried steak...

...and Exhibit B - Oh, I could dive right in! Pass the biscuits!
~
It gets confusing because the US say 'chicken fried steak' but it is actually a flour coated piece of beef.  Then they have breaded (crumbed) chicken.   In Australia, we would call that a chicken schnitzel. Anyhoo, here is the gravy recipe which the US also calls peppered cream and peppered milk gravy.
I'm gonna get onto some buttermilk biscuits next! That's scones to us Aussies, y'all!

HOMEMADE GRAVY FOR BISCUITS AND CHICKEN FRIED STEAKS

70 gms butter
4 good tbspn plain flour
2 cups milk (I used skim which is probably sacrilege in the US!)
Salt and pepper to taste
1 tspn chicken stock powder
Sprinkle of cayenne pepper
~
On low heat, melt butter in a frypan on the stove, add in the flour and cook it off for 3-4 minutes, stirring (I use a whisk) constantly so its just bubbling.  Gradually add in the milk a bit at a time until you have a smooth sauce, stir it, stir it, stir it to get rid of lumps!  Add in salt and pepper to your taste and the cayenne (not too much!).  Let it bubble away for several minutes to cook off the flour.   Using skim milk wasn't a problem as the butter makes it nice and creamy.
You may need a little more milk the thin the gravy to pouring consistency.
~
Serve over chicken or beef schnitzels with mashed potatoes and your favourite vegetables! Yummy!

What's on the menu at your house?

Cheers - Joolz xx

  1. Texas born and bred here. What you made is Chicken Fried Chicken...or maybe Faux Chicken Fried Chicken since you baked it. :) The 'Chicken Fried' indicates the method of preparation, and should probably be hyphenated (if we were concerned about such things as grammar around here). Chicken Fried Steak is definitely beef. I've also seen such a thing as Chicken Fried Bacon, which could probably be renamed 'Heart Attack on a Plate' especially since it was being served with Ranch Dressing as an appetizer!

I just blogged a post about another Texas fave.

You get extra points for getting the apostrophe in "y'all" in the right place. :)

  2. Haha!I learnt the "y'all" off Dr Phil!

I could have fried the chicken but its much healthier baked in the oven. That gravy was delicious!

    1. Yeah, I'm on Texan-cook probation, because I don't like to actually fry anything. I hate cleaning up grease splatters. :) I usually relent once a year to make Chicken Fried Steak on son's birthday...it's his favorite.

  3. Biscuits and gravy is a favourite in this house, as we tend to pig out I only make it on special occasions. I would eat it every week and chicken fried steak as well.

  4. Watermelon smoothie - my all time favourite. I spent all weekend downing them as it happens
