Pickling beets ...

Yesterday started off very chilly...

But the day warmed up to a lovely 24C...

My standard roses out front are just starting to pop...

I wish I could remember the name of this one ... It's the rose featured in my blog header picture, its so pretty when it blooms.

I've been on the pickle train again! I made bread and butter cucumber pickles ...

Oh, we had this delicious salmon last night, cooked to buttery perfection by my clever huz! Once upon a time, I would never eat salmon like this - now I am a convert!

I Also pickled more beetroot - I'm on my last jar from the last batch and its delicious...

I made these five jars from $8 worth of beetroot.
Here's Bonnie, standing sentry...
Hmmm, I must try that natural weed killer this weekend. I've got lots of weeds that have popped up between the pavers...
I've decided its going to be a 'get the job done' kind of weekend! Best be off and get stuck into it!
Cheers - Joolz xx

  1. Love the roses, such a pretty colour. Do you have a favourite recipe you use when pickling your beetroot as I'd love to try making my own as well this year :) barb.

  2. Try using boiling water on those weeds between the pavers

  3. Yummy looking food at your place as usual Joolz. You should try and grow your own beetboot, it is so easy and tastes like no other :)

Gorgeous roses, wish I could grow ones like that. The ones I had here keeled over...

  5. This post reminds me that whenever someone at home would eat the last homemade bread and butter pickle in the jar, my mother would open a can of sliced beets, drain them, and put them in the jar with the pickle juice that was left. After a few days they were great pickled beets!

  6. Joolz, I was looking at my beetroot today and thinking that I have enough to make some relish. I use Rhonda's recipe on her Down to Earth blog. I still have a couple of bottles of bread and butter cucumbers left from last season and am going to plant some cucumber seedlings tomorrow so there will be more batches being done in a couple of months time which will take us through winter and into next spring. I have planted a couple of varieties this year including Chuzzle which I got from Fair Dinkum Seeds. It is a little tiny cucumber and I am keen to see what it tastes like.

  7. I'm nearly out of my beetroot relish. I've planted some seed in the veggie patch, so hopefully I will have them coming out of my ears. I won't mind one little bit!
