Sloppy hamburger mix ...

... not to be confused with Sloppy Joes! This recipe has been doing the rounds at camp grounds and caravan parks in these parts for years. You can make any sized quantity of it, double, triple the ingredients to suit your crowd. I think the beauty of it is that if you still need to feed a few more people that turn up late, just add a bit more flour, milk and onion and it will extend to feed the hoards!
Chop 1 large onion, finely
Grate 1 large carrot, finely

Add 1 packet of chicken noodle soup mix
Add 500 gms beef mince (or chicken/pork would work too)

Add 1/2 cup plain flour
2 teaspoons dried parsley
1 egg
Salt and pepper to your taste

Now add in 1/2 cup of milk and I find the best way to mix all of this ...

... is with a food safe dispoable rubber glove. Get in their and squish it all about and get it all combined. Add another 1/4 cup of milk at a time until the mix is ... sloppy!

Here it is packed ready for our camping trip today - if it happens - we have high winds, drizzling rain and its 16C ... Sigh! But a night by the sea tucked up in Ruby sounds good, right?

As I said, if you now added a bit more flour, milk and onion to this quantity, this would feed 3-4 more people.
I'll let you know if we end up going ...
Cheers - Joolz xx

  1. We make similar but use salt reduced french onion soup instead of the chicken noodle. We also include a grated apple (peeled Granny Smith), some freshly minced garlic and a good slug of Worcestershire Sauce ;)

Enjoy your glamping! Can smell those burgers cooking all the way from Brissy!

    :)

  2. Hi Joolz , I'm not a blogger but do follow a couple to see what is going on in Oz. Found your recipe, in our area of SA we call these "spew burgers" I also add a grated zucchini and use half a cup of milk and half a cup of water. Makes them a bit sloshier than your mix looks. A friend also adds a little bit of curry for fun. NannaJS

    1. Haha, yes, I have heard them called spew burgers too! Yes, a zucchini would have gone in too but I didn't have one last night. I guess the recipe lends itself to many variations of what is on hand at the time. - J

  4. This looks great. Have not used chicken noodle soup before. We use spring vegetable soup in rissoles. Love the idea of the apple Kimmie. Will have to give that one a go :)

  5. Not only is the recipe inviting, but I've never seen a tent set up like that! I like to get away to the state parks here in New York State's Adirondack Mountains where I can relax, paddle a canoe or kayak in the many ponds and streams, and settle in with a good book.

  6. It sounds good, will have to try it. What is that tent thingy called!!!!!!!!!! We have a tent, but gosh to be able to place it over the truck like that would be great on really cold nights.

    1. Basically you call it a roof top tent which is attached to our Land Rover Defender. Yes, I feel very safe up there and its lovely and cosy (especially when we have our hot water bottles!).

  7. We call these spew balls lol! Our recipe is 500gms mince, 1 finely chopped onion, 1 cup SR flour, 1 pkt chicken noodle soup, 1 pkt french onion soup, 2-3 eggs, 1 cup milk and one cup of water. Mix well and leave overnight.

So many different versions for the same thing...very interesting :)
