Corned Beef ...

Brianna is home because she has a placement for one week at a local hospital so she requested Corned Beef for dinner. I haven't had much luck with corned beef - I usually buy from Woolworths and have found it to be tough and tasteless.

I walked into our locally owned supermarket and happened to run into the butcher man himself. I asked if he did a good corned beef and he told me to choose the Butchers Brand one and not the 'other' one. The price of the piece I bought was $19.90 so it will want to be good!

It certainly looks nice, so it's in the slow cooker with water, vinegar, cracked pepper, brown sugar, a few bay leaves and an onion. I'll let you know how it is later when I serve it up.

Cheers - Joolz

  1. We don't eat it much theses days, but always found it went along way hot or cold. I used to cook it in gingerale. ( leave out the sugar and some of the water. )Hope you enjoy yours.

  2. I hope it was wonderful Joolz! I'm a huge corned beef fan, but all the ones we have had lately have been soooo ordinary. I have bought one from a different supermarket here, but haven't tried it yet.

  3. My advice is to get it from your local butcher and ditch the supermarkets all together.

  4. I love corned beef and often make it in the slow cooker. I season it with garlic and pickling spice. I serve it with boiled potatoes, carrots, and cabbage. Yummy.Leftovers are good for sandwiches or hash. I hope you enjoy yours.

  5. I always buy mine from the butcher, you pay a bit more but it is worth it. The last one I cooked I did it in the slow cooker with similar ingredients to you, it was so tender and yum, so I will do it in that from now on. I love mine with white sauce, mashed potato and peas (always had it like that since I was a kid).
